This course is the ideal place to start if you haven’t been hill walking in winter before and over the five days you’ll get to go on some great mountain journeys and learn lots with one of our highly qualified and experienced instructors. We deliver this course at a low client to instructor ratio (4:1) so that the content can easily be tailored to your ability and aspirations which will enable you to progress your skills safely and swiftly.
Over the five days you’ll get plenty of opportunity to practice and develop your skills in a wide variety of situations, snow conditions and mountain areas. In order to aid your learning, and so you can consolidate your skills, then for the final two days of the course you’ll plan and lead your own mountain journeys whilst under the watchful eye of one of our instructors.
£425 per person. Ice axes and crampons are provided free of charge.

This course is based out Aviemore, in the Scottish Highlands. From this location we are ideally placed to take advantage of the wide selection of superb mountain areas available throughout the Cairngorms National Park.
This course is designed to give you the skills to independently go walking in the British mountains in winter conditions and as such the following core skills and topics are covered:
- Ice Axe and Crampon Use
- Ice Axe Arrest/Braking
- Equipment Selection
- Winter Navigation
- Avalanche Awareness and Avoidance
- Route Planning
- Emergency Snow Shelters
We deliver this course at a maximum ratio of one instructor to four clients. This enables us to easily tailor the course to your ability and aspirations and ensures that you will receive a large amount of individual input from your instructor so that you can develop your skills swiftly and safely.
Previous Experienced Required
Previous summer hill walking experience. Please be prepared for being on the hill for 6-8 hours each day, not all of this time will be spent walking, or journeying, as we will stop from time to time to introduce and workshop various skills with you.
Accommodation (not included)
We don’t provide accommodation on our courses as some of our clients would like to stay in luxury accommodation, some in B&B’s, some in bunkhouses and some like to camp. Therefore, we feel our clients benefit from being able choose the accommodation they personally prefer in relation to their budget.
We are more than happy to recommend places to stay therefore after completion of your booking you will receive a course information pack which will contain further information about your course and a selection of local accommodation options.
