Overview

Our Next Level Winter Skills course is ideal for anyone who has has basic winter skills, but would like to build on these and gain confidence and further knowledge. Over the three days we’ll teach, and refine, all of the the skills you’ll need whilst going on some great mountain journeys at the same time. We’ll ensure that you’ll leave the course confident and capable to head out and have winter adventures on your own.

We’ll recap your core winter skills and develop them further so that you’re confident using them in the harshest conditions. We’ll cover advanced movement techniques for steeper terrain, poor visibility winter navigation, avalanche awareness and snowpack analysis, as well as introducing emergency ropework skills and equipment for safeguarding movement on steeper terrain.

This course is mainly practical and based out on the hill. With Aviemore, in the Cairngorms National Park, as our base we are perfectly placed to make the most of the ski road access to the high plateau of the Northern Cairngorms, offering a wide range of options for our courses.

We deliver this course at a low client to instructor ratio (6:1). Sample Itinerary

Day 1; we’ll meet and look at personal equipment, weather and avalanche forecasts before planning and preparing for a mountain journey. Once on the hill we’ll recap your core winter skills, and as we journey we will practice our winter navigation and further develop our avalanche awareness and avoidance.

Day 2; will start by introducing ropes, equipment and basic mountaineering techniques, then move onto steeper snow and rocky ground and look at how we can safeguard movement in both ascent and descent using these.

Day 3; is all about putting everything together. Therefore you, and the other course participants, will get the opportunity to plan and go on a self-led mountain journey. Your instructor will be alongside to give advice and coaching, but hopefully only a little input is required. Today is also an opportunity to revisit anything covered earlier in the course.
