Overview

Our Discover Winter Skills course is the ideal place to start if you haven’t been hill walking in winter before. Over the two days we’ll teach you all of the core winter skills you need, whilst going on some great mountain journeys at the same time.

This course is mainly practical and based out on the hill. With Aviemore, in the Cairngorms National Park, as our base we are perfectly placed to make the most of the ski road access to the high plateau of the Northern Cairngorms, offering a wide range of options for our courses.

We deliver this course at a low client to instructor ratio (6:1). Our low ratio ensures you receive personalised coaching, allowing you to maximise your learning and enjoyment during your time with us. Our highly qualified and experienced instructors will introduce you to, and provide opportunities to practice, the following winter skills:

  • Ice Axe and Crampon Use
  • Self-arrests (Ice Axe Arrest/Braking)
  • Personal Movement Skills, on a variety of snow types and angles
  • Equipment Selection
  • Route Planning

This course is great for anyone who wants to start enjoying the delights of winter hill walking, and to develop the core skills needed to become independent winter walker. In order to get the most out of the course then you’ll need to have some previous summer hill walking experience.

    Who is this course for?

    This course is great for anyone who wants to start enjoying the delights of winter hill walking, and to develop the skills to become an independent winter walker.

     

    Previous Experience Required

    Previous summer hill walking experience. Please be prepared for being on the hill for 6-7 hours each day, not all of this time will be spent walking, or journeying, as we will stop from time to time to introduce and workshop various skills with you.

     

    Course Aim

    To introduce you to the delights, and the fundamental skills, of winter hill walking.

     

    Course Content

    On the first morning of your course your instructor will chat to you, and the other course participants, about your previous experience and aspirations which will enable them to tailor the course to everyone’s needs. This course is designed to give you the skills to independently go walking in the British mountains in winter conditions and as such the following core skills and topics are covered:

     

    • Ice Axe and Crampon Use
    • Self-arrests (Ice Axe Arrest/Braking)
    • Personal Movement Skills, on a variety of snow types and angles
    • Equipment Selection
    • Route Planning
    • Winter Navigation
    • Avalanche Awareness and Avoidance

     

    Sample Itinerary

    Day 1; Meet in Aviemore for introductions and equipment check. Introduction to Mountain Weather and Avalanche forecasts. Head up to the Cairngorm ski car park and journey into the
    northern corries. The skills we’ll focus on today are: efficient travel, good footwork, simple uses of ice axes, self-arrests, avalanche awareness and basic winter navigation.

    Day 2; Meet in Aviemore to discuss weather and avalanche forecasts and the plan for the day. Again we might head for the easy access at Cairngorm and try to take in a longer journey with a summit, maybe Cairngorm. Today we will continue to develop your personal movement skills, which includes cramponing and moving on steeper terrain, as well as this we’ll also spend time progressing your winter navigation,  avalanche awareness and we’ll look at emergency procedures.

     

    Accommodation

    We don’t provide accommodation on our courses as some of our clients would like to stay in luxury accommodation, some in B&B’s, some in bunkhouses and some like to camp. Therefore, we feel our clients benefit from being able choose the accommodation they personally prefer in relation to their budget.     Equipment

    We will provide all of the necessary safety equipment for your course, including ice axes, crampons, ski goggles, maps and compasses. All you need to do is bring along any of your own personal kit that you would like to use.
