This is the ideal course for anyone wishing to understand the essential concepts and techniques involved in navigating in the UK. Tailored coaching and continued practice throughout the day allows for a steady development of your skills, leaving you confident in the basics of navigating. No previous experience is necessary. So whether your a seasoned walker who’s after some formal instruction or someone who’s looking at getting out and doesn’t know where to begin this is the course for you.
This course can be upgraded to our two day Improver Navigation Course. The first day is the same.

Who is this course for?
Anyone wanting to learn the basic skills of navigation – no previous experience is necessary.
To be able to plan and follow walks of your own devising.
During the course you will learn all of the essential navigation techniques needed to be able to head out and follow routes in the countryside mainly on paths and tracks. Throughout the day we’ll aim to cover the following skills or techniques:
- Map Scales, Symbols, Grid System and Grid References
- Compass Skills- taking a bearing and measuring distance
- Pacing and Timing distances
- Simple Navigational Strategies
- Access- where you can and can’t go walking
- Equipment Selection
We deliver this course at a maximum ratio of one instructor to six participants. This enables us to easily tailor the course to your ability and aspirations and ensures that you will receive a large amount of individual input from your instructor so that you can develop your skills swiftly and safely.
We don’t provide accommodation on our courses as some of our clients would like to stay in luxury accommodation, some in B&B’s, some in bunkhouses and some like to camp. Therefore, we feel our clients benefit from being able choose the accommodation they personally prefer in relation to their budget.
We will provide all of the necessary safety equipment for your course. All you need to do is bring along any of your own personal kit that you would like to use.
Upon completion of your booking you will receive the course joining information where you will find more details about your course including: the course meeting point and timings, a suggested kit list and local accommodation options.
