This course is for anyone with a good grasp of the basic navigational techniques who wishes to learn everything there is to know about the dark-arts of expert navigation! Complex techniques and strategies are broken down and explained in context, allowing for significant development in your abilities and confidence, in even the most challenging conditions.

Who is this course for?
Anyone with previous navigation experience, and a good grasp of basic navigation techniques. If you have completed our Improver Navigation Course then this is the next logical step.
To be able to plan and follow walks of your own devising away from paths and tracks.
We aim to cover the navigational skills required to stray from the well trodden paths so that you can safely and confidently plan and follow routes on open moorland. Over the two days we’ll aim to cover the following topics and techniques:
- Map Scales, Symbols, Grid Sytem and Grid References
- Compass Skills- taking and following a bearing, including back bearings
- Pacing and Timing distances as a Navigational Aid
- Navigational Strategies- include poor visibility options
- Navigating using Contours
- Route Planning
- Relocation Techniques using small features
- Access- where you can and can’t go walking
- Equipment Selection
This course has be designed to cover the syllabus for the Silver N.N.A.S. award. Therefore you can attend this course and gain your Silver award at the same time, if you so wish. We deliver this course at a maximum ratio of one instructor to six participants. This enables us to easily tailor the course to your ability and aspirations and ensures that you will receive a large amount of individual input from your instructor so that you can develop your skills swiftly and safely.
We don’t provide accommodation on our courses as some of our clients would like to stay in luxury accommodation, some in B&B’s, some in bunkhouses and some like to camp. Therefore, we feel our clients benefit from being able choose the accommodation they personally prefer in relation to their budget.
We will provide all of the necessary safety equipment for your course. All you need to do is bring along any of your own personal kit that you would like to use.
