A.E. Bursary Funding – Mountain Qualifications

How can we help?

Adventure Expeditions (our sister company) is a not-for-profit organisation, at the heart of which is a desire to help widen participation in outdoor activities. Every year we’re able to direct a significant pot of money towards helping the right people get the qualifications to lead and inspire others in the outdoors. We distribute this in the form of bursaries to individuals wishing to undertake our NGB qualifications who are eligible for the funding; school staff from non-fee paying schools and volunteer leaders (e.g. Charities/Guides/Scouts/DofE).

How we might be able to help

We are keen to help wherever possible – Support from AE bursaries is given to help train/assess leaders so they can lead outdoor activity courses and expeditions for people in the future. For 2024, we’re pleased to be able to offer funding support to up to a maximum of 50 individuals (20 for ML, 10 for HML, 10 for RCI, and 10 for LL). This funding is given in the form of either:

  • A £100 contribution towards Mountain Leader course fees

  • A £100 contribution towards Hill and Moorland Leader Course fees

  • A £50 contribution towards Rock climbing Instructor course fees

  • A £50 contribution towards Lowland Leader course fees

Please note that an individual can only apply for one part-funded course place.

Bursary Criteria

To be eligible for this bursary funding you have to either be currently working in a non-fee-paying school or working voluntarily, delivering outdoor activities to young people (or have the intention to do so upon completion of the award/qualification). Volunteers who lead adults are also eligible but not where those adults pay un-subsidised fees for the course/walking-group attendance. In brief – anyone that is actively seeking to give their time to help people engage in outdoor activities will be eligible for the funding!

Examples:

  • Teachers delivering DofE expeditions or Outdoor Activities

  • Scout & Girl-guiding leaders

  • Voluntary DofE Assessors/Supervisors

  • Voluntary Army/Sea/Air Cadet Leaders

  • Mental Health walking groups/Elderly Fitness Walks/Amputee Charities

Applications will be checked, by means of a reference, to ensure that the applicant meets the bursary criteria. Please be aware that bursary funding may not always be available due to funds having already been fully allocated. If this is the case we will have made every effort to remove the offer of funding from the associated websites.

How to apply

To apply please follow the two steps outlined below.

Please get someone from your supporting organisation (e.g. School, Youth Club, Scouts, Girlguides etc) to complete a Letter of Recommendation (Template below) and return it to you- as you will need to attach it to your online application form.

Once you have your completed letter of recommendation, please complete our online application form, ensuring you attach your letter of recommendation.

What happens once I’ve submitted my online application?

Once you have submitted your application it will be reviewed and you will be notified if it has been successful or not along with the reasons as to why. We aim to process applications as quickly as possible but please note that it can take up to 14 days. If successful you will receive a coupon code/s from us, via email, that can be entered at the checkout on our website. This will automatically deduct the amount from the course fee that will be paid for by our bursary scheme.

n.b. We can also easily invoice your school/organisation upon request – simply select ‘pay by bank transfer’ when you complete the booking and add any notes (e.g. PO number, School Address, Accounting email/contact). We’ll send you an invoice which you can pass on or email this direct to your accounts department.
